NL6124: Progress Part 3

Okay peeps.  I need some encouragement.  Something along the lines of "it looks fabulous," "you're going to be a hit," or "absolutely stunning" will do quite well.  Feel free to ham it up a bit if you'd like. =)

I am having a serious MEH moment.  Why?  The dress reminds me of penguins.

Bad ass kung fu penguins, but penguins nonetheless.  Every time I look at the dress form, I have the urge to travel to Antarctica.

In addition to having penguin-itis, I'm not too sure about the placement of the peplum.  When I basted the dress, I didn't include the peplum because I didn't think it contributed anything to the fit.  But now, I don't think the peplum sits in the right area; it looks way too low.  In the picture above, I've exaggerated the waist-nipping to show how I want the dress to fit.
Maybe the weight of everything is bringing the seam down.  The side back princess seam isn't stitched yet; I am trying to decide if I should bring up the peplum seam.

I've decided to go with adding a black neckband to the neckline and armholes.  I think this will help to break up the white front panel.

Okay, maybe the dress isn't THAT bad.  I do like mixing black and white, but I think the contrast might be too stark.  I'm going to keep rolling with it since time is running out.  If all else fails, I do have a back-up dress for the mixer.  I can't work on this too much longer since I haven't even muslined the formal dinner dress.

Yeeeah.  See.  This photo is not helping.  I was going to straighten my hair for the mixer.  Maybe I'll leave off the gold belt.

    1. Bwahahahahaha!! Oh no...now I'll have penguin tits, too! As for the waddle, it's all up to the shoes. I suppose this wouldn't be the right time to test wearing 3" heels. LOL

  3. It is coming along beautifully! I love it and you will rock it; classic, clean lines. The black neck band is a wonderful touch. p.s. penguins are classic too!

    1. It's a delicate balance to be self-deprecating and funny at the same time. Somehow, I manage. LOL I went into my sewing room today and stared at the dress a second time. It doesn't look too bad now. =)

  5. It looks stunning - definitely go with the black neck/arm bands. The lines on the dress are just devine - it all says pure elegance and class.

  6. Stop worrying!!! It's turning out fantastically, and you just need to KEEP SEWING. There's no time to waste (and no reason to keep second-guessing yourself), so take a deep breath, and listen to all of your wonderfully wise and stylish sewing friends here! Repeat after me and make it your mantra: "This dress rocks, and I rock."

  7. NO no no you are WRONG.. it is GORGEOUS EXQUISITE SEXY AND CLASSY all at the same time. Honesty - I love it. Black and white is such as classic combination. Hard to tell on the dress form about the height of the peplum. I am sure that you will end up with a beautiful dress.

  8. I really don't think it looks like a penguin! The peplum doesn't look too low to me.

    1. Thanks Kyle. I'm still on the fence about the peplum. I think I will stitch up the back and try it on to see.

We are own own worst critics. Aren't we? The dress looks great. Can't wait to see it on you.

  10. Think about making the black bands as thin as possible. It will keep the contrast from being so stark. I think the dress is turning out great. Add in some great hair, jewelry, and sexy shoes and you will be da bomb.

    1. Great advice, Towanda. I'll play around with the binding widths to see which looks best. I am going to open up the neckline even more (after having taken off 2") and try to make it more rounded.

  11. I love it and can't wait to see it finished. I think I might need a bad ass kung fu penguin dress myself.

  12. I see what you mean, but I don't think anyone else will when you walk in. It looks fine. As for the peplum, try the dress on you - it will sit differently on you. And don't forget to put your shoes on when you try the dress on to check the peplum. Wear the shoes you are going to wear - this will change the whole look of the dress. Hold yourself up straight - imagine a string holding your head and walk tall from there. Posture is the key to looking fantastic.

    1. Yes, good point. I really need to stitch the side back seams and try it on. I still need to get the shoes. Procrastination is evil! In the meantime, I'll put on some shoes that are very close to the height of the pair I want.

  13. PS, and don't forget to do a good undie check - make sure you wear good support amd smooth line undies.

  14. I think you should sew the side seams closer together to get the fit you want. Then I think you should wear this awesome dress with red or yellow or bright blue accessories and really stand out in the crowd. It's a great dress and I agree with Kristine that you should just keep on sewing.

    1. I'll probably need to take in the front and back seams some more. It's going to be hard to take in the side seams because they're sewn before the horizontal peplum and princess seams. I took pretty aggressive seam allowances on the sides, so hopefully this will all work out.

I was thinking of red or bright blue shoes. =) Thanks for the great advice!

  15. Great post. I love the look of the dress but at times, when I sew, I get overwhelmed with an idea and need to take a step back. I think when you're finished and you accessorize, you'll wear it and hear all kinds of compliments.

  16. I think so long as you don't wear it with a yellow or gold beak (or big necklace) and shoes, you won't look too penguin-ish.
