It's time for my quarterly blog post. 😅 I truly have good intentions to post more frequently, but when life starts life-ing, the little energy I have is used to get more energy (i.e., sleep); catch up on basic stuff like laundry, dishes, cleaning; and then do a bit of sewing.
Though I do not write blog posts often, I do try to keep up the In-Progress page - mainly as a log of things I've completed and have yet to complete.
Alright...on with the updates. As this post is kind of long, I've created some sections for organization.
- handbag contest
- Catalina cross-body bag
- New Look 6560
- Closet Core Kelly Anorak
- more shirts for the dude
- Make 9 2023 update
- whole 30 challenge
- on the cutting table
- what to do with this blog (inevitable dialogue every blogger has)
Handbag Contest: I did not win and that's okay. I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed to not win anything for second place - especially since the vote was very close (winner 322, me 320). The second place prize was awarded by random selection, so it stung a little more. Oh well. This was the first contest I'd entered in several years and will likely be the last.
Catalina Cross-body bag: I first made this bag last year and really, really like carrying it. It's roomy, comfortable, and kinda cute. =) When perusing Oro Rosa's site for other bag patterns, I came across a black patent leather version and immediately had to have one. Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right? Right??
The patent leather was purchased from My PunkBroidery; the lining is novelty quilting cotton from JoJos. I didn't have any major issues sewing this version and followed the instructions as with the first.
Though I am getting better with binding, I can see where more practice is needed. Guess I'll have to make more bags.
New Look 6560: This is my second version of this pattern - made with a proper FBA. The first version is okay, but can be fidgety to wear because I didn't make an adjustment. This time, I retraced the front, made a half-inch FBA, and added length to the front and back.
This time, I made view A with the neckline flounce and long sleeves; the fabric is cotton sateen. I was inspired by a version of this top made by @cookeka (on Instagram).
Closet Core Kelly Anorak: It took two months to finish this jacket - not because it was terribly difficult. But because I didn't have all of the hardware (grommets, snaps, drawstring cord) and I couldn't decide if I wanted to create or buy the lining pieces. Ultimately I decided to buy the lining expansion pack because I did not feel like trying to figure out the left/right facing and hood situation.
I have some thoughts about making this jacket and I'll share in another post.
Shirts for my partner: I batch-sewed three more shirts for my partner. He's happy with the ones I've made before and since I don't mind sewing for him, I decided to make more. He's pretty low key and doesn't need/want a lot of clothes, so these will probably be the only shirts I make (in addition to the two I made a few months ago) for him this year. If he wants, I might make him a pair of pants and/or a jacket.
Make 9 2023 update: Despite having a successful 2022 Make 9, this year's intention is on turtle mode. So far, I've only completed two of nine items. Sure there are still six months left in the year, but I'm not really feeling anything else in the plan so...yeah. I traced and made adjustments to the pattern pieces for McCall's 8286, so that might happen. And finding a deep stash fabric older than eight years won't be hard. Everything else is uninspiring right now.
Whole 30 Challenge: @pinkmimosabyjacinta on Instagram started this challenge [I have no idea] years ago and it's gain its own following. The idea is to refrain from acquiring any new fabric before having sewn or de-stashed 30 yards. If you buy fabric before meeting the goal, you have to start over. The first two times I tried the challenge in 2021 and early 2022, I made it to 16 yards both times. This included completed items and fails.
My most recent attempts have been very successful. Between 2 Dec 2022 and 2 Feb 2023, I sewed/gave away a total of 33.625 yards and from 11 May 2023 to 30 May 2023, I de-stashed 32.625 yards. I started my third round of the challenge for the year on 31 May and have already sewn 9.5 yards with five more projects totaling 12 yards planned. I like doing this challenge as it keeps me motivated to sew from the stash.
On the cutting table: I need to make an FBA for Simplicity 1538 (button-front shirt) and make pattern adjustments to New Look 6644 (cargo pants). I also want to finish the Blue Calla Boronia bowler that I started last year. I used a plaid fabric for the interior lining and I didn't pay enough attention to matching the print when cutting and it annoys me juuuuust a little. It's the lining so it's not like it will be very visible. Still...
What to do with this blog? I've come across many posts like this over the years and...well...here I am. I love reading and talking about sewing, so I don't want to give it up. I also do not post nearly as frequently as I used to or would like and when I do, the task of focusing on writing can be challenging. My home situation has no doubt played a huge role in this - which leaves me asking the question: where do I go from here?
I thought about starting a YouTube channel, then I quickly remembered I do not want to be out there like that and I don't know if faceless YouTube channels are successful. I'm not looking to be an influencer or get into monetization; I just want to connect with people who sew clothes.
I don't know. To anyone who has faced this question, what did you do? Do you still read sewing blogs? Have you moved to other forms of social media?
I am grateful for everyone who reads and leaves comments. I hope what I share is helpful and entertaining.

I don't blog myself but I do still follow and read sewing blogs. I always enjoy your posts and your ideas/progress/challenges always make me think in new ways about my own sewing plans and progress, or lack thereof. I hope you continue here but if not, I understand. --Elizabeth
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Elizabeth. I intend to keep the blog and post whenever I can. I am grateful for your continued interest. Thank you for commenting.
DeleteI always enjoy reading what you have to share…a small bit of community and commradery. I do recognize it takes a lot of time to prepare and post your thoughts. I usually feel bad when you (or others) start with comments about not posting frequently etc… you might consider NOT wasting your time on that negative emotion… this is your journal that you allow some of us to peek into… feel good about creating the content YOU need to keep track of your plans and accomplishments. Love the items you posted and very interested what you have to say about the Kelly .. I have been eyeing that since it was released. Wasn’t heavy or long enough wher I used to live, now too much where we are in FL. Thank you! Chris in FL
ReplyDeleteThis is incredibly kind. Thank you, Chris. I am happy to be a part of the community and am happy to continue to dialogue with you. I intend to post about the Kelly anorak soon. I need to take more pictures and collect my thoughts about the experience in sewing the jacket.
DeleteI'm still reading blogs and really appreciate the time it takes. Life has been hard on my family the last 3 years and I have not had time to sew much let alone blog, but I'll be getting back to it soon. I don't want instagram so blogs are my only way to read up on others sewing too. I'm impressed with your stash reduction. I really need to do that in the next 6 months.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry that things have been challenging for you and your family. I hope you are able to find some pockets of joy and sew whenever you can. I mostly peruse Instagram for inspiration and comment on accounts I follow; rarely do I post my own items nowadays. The stash reduction felt so freeing! Though it is a small dent in the amount of fabric I have, it felt good to let go of pieces I know I'll never use.
DeleteI read sewing blogs and watch sewing You Tube channels. I've used both recently for learning how to do an FBA on things I'm sewing for a friend who is a very different shape to me. I don't do Instagram, and only a bit on Facebook. I also enjoy the discussion at https://thesewingplace.org.uk/
ReplyDeleteHi Ruthie! Thank you for sharing the link to the sewing place; I'll check it out. I don't do Facebook and lurk in the background on IG. =) I like blogging and intend to continue - just not as often as I would like. I also read blogs and watch You Tube videos. There are a lot of channels that I like and some that are questionable.
DeleteHi, thanks for still blogging! I love to read blogs and am thankful for anyone who continues to do so. Please keep it up, however irregular. I find myself looking less at instagram, it’s just not the same. But I fully understand that life intervenes. That’s the reason I never managed to start a blog.
ReplyDeleteThank You
Julia
Thank you so much for the encouragement, Julia. I agree that Instagram isn't the same and that's probably part of the reason why I don't share very frequently. I will post as often as I can here. Thank you for reading. =)
DeleteI enjoy reading blogs, even when they have slowly become sparse.. Many of the bloggers I enjoyed reading have wound down and either stopped posting completely (life!) or moved on to other SM sites..
ReplyDeleteL, every post of yours make me smile and I enjoy reading your posts whenever you get to post it. Glad you are thinking about continuing with it. That's too bad about the second prize not really being a prize. Duh! that doesn't make any sense...
I have had a very difficult year last year but a great break through has come out of that and I'm finally sewing ..... after years of trying to find my way back to sewing that gave me sew much joy!! I haven't made anything for me, but I sewed an outfit for each of my children last month and they enjoyed wearing that. next is my turn.... I might return to blogging - just to have something to record and look back later.
Oops. I somehow replied beneath your comment.
DeleteMy dear Kay! It is always nice to see a note from you. Is your email address the same? We have to catch up. Thank you for reading my ramblings and for the encouragement to keep with it. =)
ReplyDeleteAwarding second place to a random entry was started several years ago as it seemed like the same people were always winning by member vote. I've watched contests for a while now and still see the same people winning by member vote, so I don't know that the change really helped much. Ah well. I love my bag and enjoy the process so much that I bought a few more patterns to try.
I'm sorry that you had a difficult year, but am glad that things are moving in a positive direction. I hope we are able to connect soon. *hugs*
:) yesss same email id... let's connect sometime. yes difficult year is gone finally and while going, it left me some great learnings. so all good in the end.
Deletemember vote is always by popularity - never by talent! why not have a group of judges judge the prizes..
Okay! I will reach out so that we can connect!! **HUGS**
DeleteI'm still reading! Albeit not timely as evidenced by the date of this comment v. the date of your blog post. I miss blogging very much and always have the best intentions to start it up again. But I also haven't been sewing much so there's that. I watch some sewing on YT but I still prefer blogs, esp. when the sewists actually know what they're doing IYKWIM. Ha. Yes, I'm still very opinionated. Double ha. Your bag looks great. The "random prize" thing is just another way that PR is usually too PC for me. But I'm glad it's still around.
ReplyDeleteDEBBIE!!!!! Holy smokes, how the hell are you?? I always smile big time when I see you on the interwebs! I miss seeing your takes and often agree with your opinions. =) I watch sewing YT videos too and there's some questionable (read: crappy) stuff out there; influencer culture is so overrated.
DeleteThanks for the compliment on my bag. I like it and bought way too much vinyl to make more. =)
I'm doing great! Thanks for asking! If you want a heart attack to go with your recent flood, go check my blog. :-)
DeleteIt’s lovely to read intermittent blog posts. I appreciate your efforts and enjoy learning about your sewing projects.
ReplyDeleteAww thank you!
