In 2019, I made the dude three shirts (one not pictured). So far, they've held up pretty well and he wears them regularly.
Using the same pattern, I recently made him a fourth shirt. Why did it take three years? Well...I have to be in the right mood to sew for others. 😬 He's a great guy, so I don't mind sewing for him. Maybe in a couple of years, I'll make him some pants and another shirt. Baby steps.
Despite using the same pattern, the fit is not as great. For this version, I used a cotton poplin with zero stretch; the shirt is rather snug in the chest area. It fits better if he doesn't wear an undershirt, but he almost always wears an undershirt. So....yeah.
I shortened the sleeves by one inch and they're still too long. The dude is almost six feet tall and the sleeves can be shortened at least another inch or two. I am convinced that Burda drafts for giants.
I don't know what to do about the back drag lines. There is probably a shoulder or other alteration needed. I'd have to experiment with making him more shirts to be sure.
Fabric & Notions:
- 2 yards of cotton poplin
- lightweight shirt crisp fusible interfacing (Fashion Sewing Supply)
- 12 5/8" black buttons (front, cuffs)
- 2 3/8" black buttons (sleeve plackets)
- needle: 80/12
- thread: regular, serger
- feet: standard
- regular throat plate
How much of a trooper is this guy? He sewed on most of the buttons after I showed him what to do! Maybe I'll make things for him more often if he does some of the work. =)
That's pretty much it for now. I'm working on my second item from Make Nine 2022 - another handbag. I want to get back to garment sewing soon. I've been in limbo about what to sew next. I thought of entering the upcoming Endless Combinations contest on PR, but nothing is really drawing me in. We'll see.

Great shirts!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ruthie!
DeleteDefinitely sloped shoulders, and some roundness up there as well. It naturally only shows on his body and not the unnaturally square dressform. Still, it's fairly easy to address, and yes, you might be making more of these good shirts if you get some help 😁
ReplyDeleteAaaaah yes! I can totally see the difference in the shoulder area on him and the dressform. I'll research the sloping shoulder adjustment and make that change on the next shirt.
DeleteHe said he didn't mind sewing on the buttons. I can't get him to sit down at the machine, though. LOL =)
Good for you making something for him…my husband is (well…was) a weight lifter so I haven’t even tried shirts, only pull on shorts for lounging. You might consider looking at high round back alterations since it looks like he has more muscle than a slim fit shirt might accommodate. Looking for to your progress on your make nine. We just moved and it will be weeks before I’m back in my sewing space.
ReplyDeleteThe dude swims and has a broad upper back, so the high round back alteration might be a good idea too. Thanks for the suggestion!
DeleteI hope you are able to return to sewing soon!
Nice shirts. They all look good. Great pattern and I love the choice of fabric. But my favorite one is the last shirt. Great job. Love it.<3
