Sewing & YouTube: Let's Talk

I watch a lot of sewing videos on YouTube. I actually don't remember the first video I watched, when or why, but suffice it to say it's a regular practice now. In addition to blogging, I think it's a nice way to connect with others in the sewing community and to see their sewing projects and plans.

Given that there is a lot of content out there, I have some thoughts about what I like and don't like.

First I appreciate anyone who takes time to share their content whether it's on YouTube, personal blog, Instagram, etc. Doing this takes a lot of energy and effort and to be consistent with it is no small feat. That there is sewing content to watch is a plus.

I tend to watch sewing videos that are clear and conversational. Meaning, I gravitate toward sewing channels where the atmosphere feels like we're sitting in a room and just talking. Too much flash and spectacle is distracting to me. Not everything is for everyone and that's totally fine.

I also like to watch videos where people talk about a specific garment sewn, its fit, and fabric pairing - same as with sewing blogs. Although I've been sewing for 21 years, there is always something new to learn and it's interesting to see how others construct their garments. It's also nice to watch some of the live sewing broadcasts and see techniques and construction in real time.

I don't care for background music at all. As I've aged, I realized I have some weird sensory issues and extraneous noises irritate me. Or...maybe I'm just getting grumpy. 😅 If a video starts with intro music, fine. But if it's constantly playing in the background, even at low volume, I stop watching. Something about it won't let me focus on the speaker.

I'm not really into the fabric and pattern haul videos. I don't not watch them, but I prefer other content more.

In no particular order are some of the channels that I watch often. Each has their own style of presentation and usually have a variety of things to share.

Why am I bringing this up now? I've been mulling the idea of starting a YouTube channel and and sharing some content there. I've operated this blog for 18 years and will continue with. I was just thinking of trying something new and YouTube seems like a good place to start. I don't have TikTok and am only passively active on Instagram.

What are your thoughts about Sewing & YouTube? Do you watch sewing videos there? If so, what are some of your likes and dislikes? Do you have any favorite channels?

Let's talk!

  1. I agree with almost ALL of your observations.. the only thing I differ on would be be hail videos. I have already hauled enough and just have envy, so I don’t engage on those. I also like some of the chatty sessions, like having seeing friends nearby. Thanks for the list! I was not familiar with many of those so will be investigating more. Best wishes if/when you choose to start a channel. I have appreciated many of your insights over the years… I now always store my patterns in plastic boxes. Thanks, as alwayS, for the time you invest In communicating. Chris in FL

    1. Hi Chris! Thank you so much for sticking around all these years! I started this blog in 2007 and am ever grateful for you and others who continue to read.

I like how you view the chatty sessions as seeing friends nearby. That's how I see it too!

    1. Thank you for the encouragement! I'll have to learn about video editing and how to upload. Maybe I'll start with something small to share here first. I truly appreciate your comment and support. =)
