I'm talking about the zipper teeth on my planned denim motorcycle jacket. The denim is grey, but the zipper teeth are brass. Wawak has aluminum zippers long enough for the front, however none short enough for the sleeve vents and pockets. Zipperstop has aluminum zippers in the sizes I'd like, but I've never ordered from them before.
I googled some images of grey denim jackets. Most have black zippers with black teeth. I spotted this lovely and think the silver looks pretty good. I might try to knock this off in a future version of this pattern. It doesn't look too hard to do - except for maybe the quilted sleeve caps.
As a reference, I pinned in a couple of zippers I had on hand. If I do go with brass, I think the lighter-colored tape looks better than black.

I think the brass is a nice unexpected pop! I prefer the lighter color tape. Can't wait to see it done..I've some denim fabric splattered with silver pant, planning on making a motorcycle jacket for my teenage cousin for christmas.

ReplyDeleteI've ordered from Zipperstop before. If I remember correctly, shipping was a wee bit slow but you can have zippers custom cut to size. Have you tried looking on the Pacific Trims website? I've ordered from them a few times and have always been pleased with my purchases.
I've tried Pacific Trims, but I could only find a small section of zippers. I called Zipperstop to ask about shipping times, and I was told it could take four to five days from the day the order was placed for it to be shipped and then some more time after that. O_o Where are they, on the moon?
DeleteI like the dark tape as well. I'd take it a step further and go with a gold topstitching to pull it all together.

DeleteThe brass looks okay, and I think the dark tape will give more definition and "punch" to the jacket. And with winter coming, black works nicely. The black pulls out the colour in the denim as well :)

DeleteI'm back for comment 2 about the zips. Judith has said it for me. Both look good. Before deciding, sleep on it. Also lay out a piece of your topstitching thread to see how that looks. I'm not sure about adding gold top stitching - I think the zip, whichever colour, needs to make the statement in this jacket.
ReplyDeleteI think Judith is right - are you going for a dark and dramatic look, or a more blended, subtle, look. Also, what do you have to wear it with? That might help decide the choice too.

DeleteThis jacket will be so great! If I were making it, I'd use the black tape as it provides some contrast and makes the teeth look more "tough". You are right on trend with this :-)

ReplyDeleteZipperstop is a great place for genuine YKK zippers - I got a bunch of black invisible zippers from them years ago and if only I can locate those!!
I thought the same thing about gold and grey initially. I can't see the two together. Then when I looked at my other denim jackets, they all have gold teeth - but the denim is blue.

ReplyDeleteThis is definitely an exciting project. I can't wait to see the finished project. I like the light zipper with brass teeth, but I think silver would also be sharp. I think the fabric could be dressed up or down with the more subtle look.

ReplyDeleteShams has written great things about zipper stop. The zipper for my It's a Cinch bag was custom cut at Pacific Trimming. I'm super pleased with it!
This gold teeth looks good on denim motorcycle jacket :) Well black could also be tried. But at last you are the one who has to wear it so choice should be yours.
